UPDATE:  In the context of planned demonstrations between 19–21 July in Kenya, which are also expected to take place near the workshop venue in Nairobi, Kenya, a decision was made to postpone this event to a later date. This decision was jointly taken by the government of Kenya, the Technical University of Kenya and UNCTAD, and follows an abundance of caution.  New dates will be announced soon on this page.

In order to promote the integration and implementation of current green and sustainable leather tanning and trading technologies in the Kenyan leather sector, UNCTAD and the TUK have decided to join forces to deliver capacity building to stakeholders to analyze and address issues pertinent to the development and growth of sustainable green leather and their value chains in Kenya. This activity builds upon previous recommendations contained in the Kenya Leather Industry Action Plan, issued in 2014 (report Nr. 99485) by the Kenya Ministry of Industrialization and Enterprise Development. The focus will be on eco-production and preservation of green hides/skins, green tanning technologies, and sound management of tannery waste. There will also be a focus on long-term solutions to the challenges of modern international green leather product trade as well as discussions on the legal framework conflicts that currently exist in the sector.

The overall objective of the activity will be to build institutional capacities by training key players in the leather tanning industry including from the private sector, government representatives, and Kenyan national and regional academia on the integration and implementation of green and sustainable tanning technologies and leather trade.

There are two main objectives:

  1. Capacity building on the key aspects of eco-production and preservation methods; green sustainable eco-tanning technologies;  eco-friendly and sustainable management of tannery wastes; leather product standards and marketability; research partnerships and collaboration between government institutions and the private sector.
  2. Development of a joint forum model for legal framework discussions governing integration and implementation of current green sustainable leather tanning in Kenya and the East African Community (EAC) region, as a means to enhance cleaner technologies and international trade in leather products.

Leather companies in Kenya and the EAC region involved in exports are under pressure to adopt clean technologies along their supply chains to meet international standards and respond to brand requirements for their products. At the same time, most of them do not have the required technical capacity.

The proposed capacity building will enable the members of the East Africa Hides and Skins Association to minimise defects and wastage at the production stages to improve their incomes and livelihoods. Members of the Tannery Owners Association, their technicians, and general workers shall have their skills enhanced to meet current global-accepted viable green and sustainable eco-tanning technologies and sustainable management of tannery wastes, in order to reduce the magnitude of the region’s tanning industries’ negative ecological and health risks. Members of the Footwear and Leather Goods Manufacturers Associations will be trained on quality leather, modern design, production and product traceability, branding, patenting, ISO 14001 standards, and e-commerce marketing platforms for their products so that they have the capacity to partake in international markets.
